Why I Switched from Stock Dialer to iCall Dialer

After months of ignoring spam calls and staring at the same boring incoming screen, I finally replaced my default phone app with iCall Dialer Contacts & Calls. It’s a full replacement for your stock dialer and contacts app, but the real draw is the video caller ID – you can assign any short clip from your gallery to play full screen when someone calls. No more guessing who’s ringing; the video gives you a visual cue that’s hard to miss. That alone sold me, but I quickly discovered both useful extras and a few annoying quirks.

Setting Up Video Caller ID – Simpler Than I Expected

I’m not a tech person, so I was worried about the video ringtone setup. Turns out, iCall Dialer offers a preview window before you apply any video. You select a clip from your phone, crop it to a few seconds, and see exactly how it looks on the incoming call screen. I tested it with a 5-second clip of my dog barking – it played smoothly, no stutter. The app doesn’t force you to use their library; anything from your own storage works. One catch: the video only shows on incoming calls, not outgoing, and it won’t play if your phone is locked with a PIN/fingerprint – you have to unlock first. That threw me off initially.

Spam Blocking and the Flash Light Feature – Honest Pros and Cons

I used to get 3-4 spam calls daily. The call blocker in iCall Dialer lets you add numbers manually or pull from a built-in community report list. I flagged a few known telemarketers, and they stopped ringing entirely. The database updates weekly, but it’s not automatic – you need to tap “update” inside the app. Forgot to do that for two weeks and a new spam number slipped through. The LED flash alert is another nice addition: when the phone is face-down or muted, the camera flash blinks on incoming calls. It works well in dark rooms, but drains the battery noticeably if you keep it enabled all day. I turn it on only at night now.

Where It Falls Short – What I Wish Someone Had Told Me

First, iCall Dialer doesn’t replace the default dialer on all Android versions. On my older phone running Android 10, it acted as a skin, but the stock dialer was still listed in settings. On a newer device with Android 13, I could set it as the default without issues – check your OS version before downloading. Second, the contacts sync is clunky: if you have multiple Google accounts, it sometimes duplicates entries. I spent 10 minutes cleaning duplicates after first launch. Third, the app contains ads. Not intrusive – a banner at the bottom – but you need to buy the pro version to remove them. That’s fair for a free tool, but worth noting.

Overall, I keep iCall Dialer installed because the video caller ID makes my phone feel personal, and the spam list actually cuts down nuisance calls. It’s not perfect, but it does two things better than any stock dialer I’ve tried. If you can tolerate a bit of setup friction and occasional duplicates, it’s a solid upgrade.
