Performance & Interface – Lightweight but Basic

I've been using Fri PDF XPS Reader Viewer on a mid-range Android phone for a couple of months now, mainly for reading scanned textbooks and occasional comic book archives. The first thing that stood out is how fast it launches – no splash screen, no unnecessary animations. The built-in file browser is straightforward, sorting files by name or date, and it handles folders without lag. However, the interface feels dated. Icons are small, and there's no dark mode toggle for low-light reading, which I missed during late-night study sessions. The thumbnail view works fine for PDFs and XPS files, but when opening a CBZ (comic book zip) the thumbnails take a few seconds to generate for the first time – a minor annoyance if you're flipping through multiple archives.

User Experience – What Works and What Doesn't

Scrolling through a 200-page PDF is smooth, and the pinch-to-zoom gesture responds accurately even on older hardware. Text search is functional but limited – it only highlights the first occurrence per page and doesn't show a result count. That's fine for scanning a specific term, but useless for thorough research. The app supports vertical and horizontal display modes, which I toggled often when switching between portrait documents and landscape comics. One real pain point: there's no way to add bookmarks or highlights. Once you close the app, you lose your last reading position unless you remember the page number. I've lost my spot in a 400-page technical manual more than once. Also, the app consistently crashes when opening particularly large TIFF scans (over 50 MB) on devices with less than 3 GB of RAM.

Who Should Use This App (and Who Shouldn't)

Fri PDF XPS Reader Viewer is a decent choice if you primarily read simple PDFs, XPS documents, or image-based comics. Its support for obscure formats like JFIF, CBZ, and TIFF gives it an edge over more popular readers that ignore those file types entirely. I found it especially useful for viewing old scanned journals saved as multi-page TIFF files – no other free reader handled them without stuttering. On the flip side, power users will quickly hit its limits. There is no annotation tool, no form filling, no cloud sync, and no ability to extract pages. If you need to mark up PDFs for work or school, this app is not the right tool. It's best seen as a bare-bones viewer for occasional use, not a daily driver for document management.
